Science of muscle growth, increasing strength and muscular activity

In this episode, Dr. Huberman describes how our brain and nervous system control muscle tissue and how to leverage that for muscle maintenance, growth (hypertrophy) and recovery. He explains muscle metabolism and muscle fiber recruitment. He details protocols for increasing muscular growth and for neuro-muscular recovery. He explains the effects of deliberate cold, anti-inflammatory agents, and anti-histamines on training progress. He describes science-supported protocols using certain weight load ranges, total sets per week, training intensity, frequency, and in-between set activities if one’s goal is to increase muscle growth, strength or endurance. Dr. Huberman reviews three foundational compounds and nutrients and three optimization compounds and nutrients that have been shown to improve neuromuscular performance. Finally, he explains how to leverage exercise and weight training to enhance cognitive function.

Coaches guide to teaching

Doug Lemov is a former teacher and school principal. He helped found Uncommon Schools, a network of high performing schools in under-served communities. His book Teach Like a Champion (now Teach Like a Champion 2.0) describes techniques used by exceptional teachers. It has sold more than a million copies and been translated into a dozen languages.

From Theory to Application

Velocity-based training (VBT) is a con-temporary method of resistance training that enables accurate and objective prescription of resistance training intensities and volumes. This review provides an applied framework for the theory and application of VBT. Specifically, this review gives detail on how to: use velocity to provide objective feedback, estimate strength, develop load-velocity profiles for accurate load prescription, and how to use statistics to monitor velocity. Furthermore, a discussion on the use of velocity loss thresholds, different methods of VBT prescription, and how VBT can be implemented within traditional programming models and microcycles is provided.

Implications For Aging And The Brain

Sauna use, sometimes referred to as “sauna bathing,” is an ancient practice with profound implications for slowing aging. Sauna bathing exposes the body to extreme heat, a form of stress. The effects of heat stress on longevity have been shown in both flies and worms, increasing their lifespans by as much as 15 percent. Large, observational studies in humans have identified strong links between sauna use and lower risk for age-related conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline, and premature death.

Train Your Mind

Want to not only fall asleep quickly but also stay asleep longer? Sleep scientist Matt Walker explains how your room temperature, lighting and other easy-to-fix factors can set the stage for a better night's rest.

It goes far beyond exchanging information

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

Harappa Diaries

Most people believe communication is only about speaking. But listening is equally important if you want to connect with people.

As American author Ernest Hemingway said, “When people talk, listen completely. Most people never listen.”

But what are the qualities of a good listener? And what are the traits of good listeners? Are there any specific characteristics of a good listener?

Moreover, how would you know what kind of listener you are, and if you possess the traits of a good listener?

Everything you need to know

In our constant pursuit of athletic excellence, we have always been on the lookout for ways to optimize training and recovery. When it comes to performance, we have learned how to take a healthy athlete and make them even bigger, stronger and faster. We manipulate reps and sets across multiple training sessions like a Fields Medal mathematician, fine tune lifting technique like a mechanic working on a Formula 1 race car and spend hours upon hours devising the ‘best’ meal plan down to the microgram like a mad scientist concocting their latest experiment.

Forbes Magazine article

When three-time NBA champion Steve Kerr first took the coaching job for the Golden State Warriors, he went to Seattle to talk with Seahawks coach Pete Carroll and watch the team’s training camp. Carroll asked, “How are you going to coach your team?” Carroll was essentially asking, “Have you thought about team chemistry? What kind of culture do you want to create? How are you going to lead your team?
